LEGAL COMPLIANCE AUDITS

The customer will be audited in relation to the OHS Act to identify non compliance. The audit will be based on regulations and sections of the act that is applicable to the customer. Recommendations, wherever applicable, will be included in the summary report. Legal Compliance Audit gives you the client an indication of your level of compliance in terms of the OSH Act.

HEIGHT SAFETY CONSULTATIONS

SKYTECH advises companies in the management and control of fall risks. Consultations are executed by experienced and trained height safety specialists who can offer the most up to date advice and solutions in fall protection. Common requirements are: 

  • Legislation relevant to working at height

HEIGHT SAFETY SUPERVISION

The supervision of workers at height are one of the most important controls to protect people at height. It is not surprising however, that often production time and exposure at height is reduced, mostly because workers are advised properly on access, safe working procedures and egress to safety by a competent height safety specialist on site.

SKYTECH consultants are responsible for this function and ensure post fall rescue and first aid equipment is available at all times, in order to respond to most fall related emergencies. Prior to work, the Height Safety Supervisor will discuss basic fall risks, which equipment to use, contingencies (particularly which rescue equipment to use), safe access, safe work at height and safe egress. In addition, the current fitness of workers, condition and availability of equipment and condition of anchor points will be monitored.

SKYTECH can be contracted to provide qualified Height Safety Supervisors for construction and maintenance at height.

The SKYTECH approach to fall risk management is source based and starts with the identification and understanding of risks of working at height. The Fall Protection Plan is based on the findings of the risk assessment and its controls are directly related to the assessed risks. The risk assessment will produce a pure risk value for each risk identified, which will be compared with a value representing the effectiveness of your current controls. The mitigation process produces suggested controls which effectiveness is also compared with the pure risk value.

SKYTECH can guarantee an effectiveness level of 81 to 90%, leaving a 10% to 19% residual risk, for human errors and unforeseen natural disasters. This high level of control is only achieved by employing international Best Practices, which can sometimes supersedes legislation in its effectiveness. Suggested controls are documented in the Fall Protection Plan, which SKYTECH can steer and manage in a Three Phase Fall Protection Plan Implementation Project to ensure that the full effectiveness level is achieved reasonably, practically and economically. The three phases comprise a Needs Analysis, Implementation of Controls and Continuation.

WORKING AT HEIGHT RESCUE EQUIPMENT POST FALL ARREST RESCUE

Your risk assessment is not complete if you have not considered the risk of a person hanging suspended in a safety harness after a fall. The medical condition as a result is called Suspension Trauma, which is basically the pinching of main arteries in the groin area, causing blood pooling in the legs. In addition, extreme pain from the harness, low levels of available blood and the upright position will deprive the heart and the brain of adequate Oxygen-rich blood which may cause a black-out, which may result in imminent death. Suspension Trauma can be controlled by using temporary relief measures (only as a time buyer) such as the Suspension Loop and the availability of a rapid retrieval rescue kit and co-workers trained in the use of it.

REMOTE ACCESS POST FALL RESCUE KIT (GOTCHA KIT

GOTCHA KIT is a ready-to-use pre-assembled rescue kit which is easy to rig up and use with total safety for the casualty and rescuer. No lanyard cutting is necessary because the GOTCHA Kit is designed to connect to the casualty remotely by means of a special connector and extension pole and a pulley assembly offering a mechanical lifting advantage assists in the easy raising of the casualty in order to release his lanyard from its anchor. Thereafter the rescuer can either lower the casualty to safety or raise him up to a safe platform.

The full operation should take approximately three to five minutes. Four different rope length kits are available which are chosen according to the casualty lowering distance (the length of the rope must be divided into the rope: pulley ratio, which could be 1:4 and therefore to reach the bottom, the full length of rope must be divided into four to calculate the maximum reach of the system. The most important feature of the kit is that it is designed to rescue an unconscious casualty, safely.

A basic training course, Module 2, will equip users with the knowledge to perform a successful rescue.
